10 Commandments of Critiquing

1. Thou shalt read thy working manuscript(s) prior to the workshop –at least twice.

2. Thou shalt make comments and editing marks on the working manuscript and return thy copy to the writer with marks/comments.

3. Thou shalt refrain from using thou, thy, shan’t… :)

4. Thou shalt attempt to use a colored pen/pencil when marking on the manuscript.

5. Thou shalt record name and phone and/or email address when marking on manuscript.

6. Thou shalt direct all criticism as requested by the author.

E.G. If the author wants feedback on character development,
refrain from remarking on grammatical errors unless said
errors are so cumbersome they impinge upon character
development.

7. Thou shalt present criticism constructively and with positive tone.

8. Thou shalt participate in critique workshops actively.

E.G. Please be vocal within reason, prepared and ready to discuss
your critique. Don’t show up when it’s your turn to be critiqued
if you haven’t been actively participating and contributing.

9. Thou shan’t attack the author.

10. Thou shall contribute regularly both with critiques and manuscripts.
