The Hockey Game

I like to play sports. I’ve played baseball since I was about seven years old, starting with t-ball.  This last spring was my final year of playing on the majors in Little League baseball.  Next year, who knows?  I might go on to play in Juniors or maybe just take a season off, this last season was kind of messed up.  But baseball isn’t the only sport I like to play or have tried out.  At school, I’ve been known to play a pretty mean game of soccer during recess.  And for a couple of years, I played flag football.  My mom played high school basketball and it’s fun to shoot hoops with her or play a little one-on-one after school.  I swim, tried a game of water polo, even volleyball both in the water and on the beach.  One thing I haven’t really tried is hockey.

Now, I like flag football, but when I saw that real football meant crushing your opponent, I wasn’t too sure I wanted to play tackle football.  And then there’s wrestling and boxing.  Boxing is heck of cool.  My uncle and I play around kick boxing, but those kinds of opportunities don’t come around much since he lives in San Diego and works in Tijuana, Mexico.  That’s a long commute just to play around and not really do kick boxing.  If you were to corner me and ask me what my favorite sport is, it would have to be kick boxing.

I used to think it would be fun to wrestle like the guys on World Wrestling Federation, but then I found out it was all fake. I watched the real stuff on television during the Olympics.  I can tell you that was not what I thought it was and no longer wanted to roll around on the mat smelling some other dude’s stinky armpits.  After I figured I didn‘t want to wrestle, a friend of mine was talking about this guy who was wrestling and the other kid had gotten his teeth stuck in the kid’s head.  It was pretty freaky hearing about how this kid with the other kid’s teeth was moving all around the mats trying to get “undone.“  Yeah, that’s definitely not for me.  But hockey?  I’ve played around outside with a hockey stick my dad got me one year for my birthday and it’s fun.  But then I saw it on TV and I thought, heck yeah, that’s something I really want to do!  And then we got the video game, NHL, and couldn’t wait to do it for real.

So, the story goes like this.  I helped out in the school cafeteria after lunch with a couple of my friends.  Someone got the bright idea to use the brooms as hockey sticks.  We found a Gatorade cap and were having a blast shooting the “puck” all over the gym floor.  Yeah, it’s all fun and games until someone looses an eye … or in my case, until someone needs stitches over their eye.  One of the kids, I won’t use his name (Mom says it’s to protect his identity or something), reared back with his “stick” and smacked my forehead.  It stung pretty bad, so I decided to leave the cafeteria and go outside to play wiffle ball.  On my way there, some kid asked what that “red” stuff on my forehead.  I reached up, wiped my hand across my forehead, looked and saw it was all bloody.   The next thing I knew, my Dad had to come take me to the emergency room where I wound up having to get five stitches.

If you’re curious as to if I still want to play hockey after that, you’ll have to wait and read my tale about when I was “skating” through the house a few years after the cafeteria incident.

Ah yes, spring at last and the crack of bats can be heard throughout the ballparks. Along with the sneezing and wheezing of hay fever.

So, in the spirit of the season, our cat, Nemmie, is wearing her “hat.” Yep, it says “BIKE” on it but I don’t think it’s a bike ride she’s aiming for. Not sure if that’s really a hat. Offers good protection: for boys that is.

The Art of Fast Pies

As much as the Pie Dudes have wanted to update their blog, life in general has prevented this from happening. As such, the start of the baseball training has already begun with practice sessions 2-3 times a week, each between 1 1/2 hours to 2+ hours. That’s a big chunk of time out of their busy-enough day. Add to that mix they learned that science projects are a requirement this year (in the past it’s been urged to participate but not necessarily required for grade) which they weren’t aware of until late last week. And then Ry-Guy surprised us all when he decided to bail on his first paintball session because he wasn’t feeling well.

Their team promises to hold a good year of playing ball. Several teammates went to the area All Stars and their coach is holding practices much earlier than we’ve experienced in the past with other teams, so the Pie Dudes are really excited as they gear up for a fun season.

On the science front, last year when they finished up working on their project (which resulted in their invitation to represent their schools at the city’s science fair after winning first place at both of their schools), they had mulled over their options for a project this year. They talked fervently about one that would disprove a former classmates claim that he suffered bone fractures and flesh penetration as the result of his brother’s inappropriate use of a paintball gun. And then they tuned into the Discover Channel’s “Mythbusters” show where gelatin molds were made to represent the same density of flesh and bone. Aha! Thus the idea was borne and their pie shaped minds started to plan out the project. Only it takes a lot of preparation and research and should have been started several months ago to work out all the kinks, not nearly enough time to do once we learned it was a requisite this year.

The Naked EggSo, instead, they’ll be learning about osmosis using the Exploratorium’s Naked Egg experiment (which, as you avid readers might recall, was one we attempted earlier in the school year on our own, only I — the Momster — wasn’t able to locate the functional digital camera in time and life, again, got ahead of us). Stay tuned as they’ll be posting much of their project here for everyone to follow along and, who knows, maybe even learn too!
But for now, we’re contending with Ry-Guy’s misfortune. By Sunday evening he was running a 100+ temperature and complaining of a very sore throat. In the past I’ve suspected strep throat under those conditions (maybe because as a child, I often succumbed to the wretched virus) but that’s always proven to be wrong, citing allergies as the culprit that have led into bacterial infections. Low and behold when his temp soared up to 102.8 and his throat was still an angry red after the fever broke, I made an appointment to see our family practitioner.

Amazingly, it didn’t take the standard 2-3 days to grow a culture from the swab they took of his throat to learn that he does (or rather, did) have strep throat. Sure enough, I found an article on the web that confirmed this (found at FamilyDoctor.org). He was prescribed Zithromax along with the regimen of altering Ibuprofen with acetophenamine and already is doing better as he digs into the homework his teacher sent home with Z-dude and takes breaks watching Lord of the Rings which he amazed many with when he read–understood and enjoyed–one of the books earlier this school year. Of course, Momster knew that was right down his alley as he really enjoys those kinds of stories.

Maybe next week we can go enjoy a good old-fashioned game of paintball. After all, I’ve got a few scores to settle (evil laugh goes here). ‘Til then, let’s hope soon they’ll be able to get some much needed posting done. Leave your love!

In the “swing” of things

Just a quick note from the Momster.  The boys are back in the swing of things: school, homework and :::dread::: cleaning their rooms.  They’re also playing ball, well, practicing.  Their team? Padres! Wild, isn’t it?  (Sorry, Giants fans, maybe next year, eh?)

Maybe tomorrow after Ry-Guy gets his tooth pulled (it’s causing the other one to push out of the side of his gum) if it hasn’t fallen out yet, I can get them to help with the updates as they have many more pictures and stories to tell!

Thanks for your comments and visiting the site.  Hope to see and hear from you frequently in the upcoming days.  It means a lot to the boys to see folks stopping by.

Ciao!

P.S. Thanks everyone for stopping by and commenting! When we get back and settled in, we’ll be sure to send out some thank you notes.
